Argentine star Lionel Messi sent a loving message to his friend Luis Suárez on Tuesday, a day after the Uruguayan national team’s top scorer announced that he will play his last match with the Celeste this week.

“You are unique, Luis Suarez, on and off the pitch!!! I love you so much,” Messi wrote on his Instagram account, over a photo of the two of them hugging each other.

The image shows the greeting between Messi and Suárez at the La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires on November 16, during the warm-up before the match between Argentina and Uruguay for the fifth date of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in North America, which the Charrúas won 2-0 against the current world champion.

Messi and Suárez, both 37, are rivals in the Rio de la Plata derby. But both currently play for Inter Miami in the MLS, and previously they defended FC Barcelona together, where their friendship was forged.

Their bond goes beyond football, as their wives, the Argentine Antonela Rocuzzo and the Uruguayan Sofía Balbi, are very close friends, as are the children of both couples.

Neymar, who together with Messi and Suárez formed a lethal trident at Barça, also had words of affection for the Uruguayan on his departure from the national team.

“Luisito forever,” Neymar wrote in Spanish on Instagram. “You put your name in the history of football in your country!! You are so great. I love you so much,” added the Brazilian star, along with red and blue heart emojis and a photo of ‘El Pistolero’ wearing the light blue number 9.

Suárez, who has scored 69 goals in 142 matches since his debut with the Celeste in 2007, said at a press conference on Monday that he will close his cycle with the national team on Friday against Paraguay in Montevideo, in the seventh round of the regional World Cup.
