The Bicolor is preparing for next Thursday’s match against Martinique for the Concacaf Nations League

GUATEMALA — The Guatemalan National Team tied 1-1 against Uruguay at Chase Stadium in the United States, where Pedro Altán scored the goal for the Guatemalans, while the Charrúas showed up with players from the local league because it was not a FIFA date.

The match started with a half-hour delay due to weather conditions. Guatemala came out onto the field with the novelty of Kevin Ramirez in the line-up as left back, while José Carlos Martínez earned a place as the only man in the box.

Uruguay was the first team to reach the opponent’s area. In just two minutes, the Uruguayans shot from outside the area and Nicholas Hagen had to intervene on the line to deflect the ball. In the next action Santiago Cartagena tried with a frontal shot, but the ball went high and over the goal.

It was in the 20th minute when Uruguay opened the scoring. In a run down the left flank, a cross was raised and Matías Fonseca headed the ball, however, Nicholas Hagen cleared the ball off the line, but on the rebound appeared Lucas Pino finishing at the back of the Guatemalan goal for the 1-0 score.

Guatemala tried to react five minutes after the goal. Alejandro Galindo lifted a cross from the left side and the far post appeared, where Elmer Cardoza and Allen Yanes were uncomfortable when shooting inside the area and the opportunity was wasted.

Before the end of the first half, a poor clearance by Nicholas Hagen on a corner kick could have meant the second goal, however, the Uruguayan player was unable to finish in front of goal.

For the complementary part, Luis Fernando Tena made changes. They entered Jose Ardon, Jose Morales, Pedro Altan, Marco Dominguez and Olger Escobarso Guatemala showed a different face and with the intention of equalizing the actions. While Uruguay suffered the injury of Diego Romero who had to leave the field.

At minute 65, Guatemala tied the match. Kevin Ramírez put pressure on Uruguay’s exit, so Elmer Cardoza recovered the ball, then filtered a pass to Olger Escobar inside the area and appeared Pedro Altan with a left-footed shot into the back of the Uruguayan goal for the 1-1 scoreline.

Ten minutes later, Erick Lemus was close to giving the Bicolor the lead. After a through ball from Pedro Altán, Lemus sent a powerful shot that ended up crashing into the crossbar, fortunately for Uruguay, in Guatemala’s best minutes on the field.

In the final stretch of the match, Guatemala recovered the ball and through Erick Lemus they tried to score the second goal, however, the Guatemalan forward was unable to define correctly, so the match ended in a 1-1 draw. It will be next Thursday, September 5, when the Bicolor will be present again at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium against Martinique for the Concacaf Nations League.
