Olympic 800m bronze medallist Mary Moraa is looking to end her season with victory at the Diamond League finals in Brussels on September 13-14.
Moraa is riding high after a stunning win at the Zurich Diamond League, where she clocked 1:57.08, edging out Britain’s Georgia Bell (1:57.94) and USA’s Addison Wiley (1:58.16).
This triumph followed her record-breaking performance at the ISTAF Berlin meeting on Sunday, where she shattered the 600m world record with a blistering 1:21.63, surpassing South African Caster Semenya’s 1:21.77.
The 24-year-old world champion said: “My plan is to finish the season in a good way, but I leave everything to God.”
Despite her recent success, Moraa admitted that post-Olympic training has been challenging.
“After Paris, the training has not been going well since we are running after every two days,” she remarked, adding that she utilising her pre-Olympics fitness.
Moraa secured bronze at the Paris Olympics in 1:57.42, behind Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma (1:57.15) and Britain’s Keeley Hodgkinson (1:56.72).
Two weeks later, she stormed to victory at the Lausanne Diamond League, clocking 1:57.91 ahead of Britain’s Bell (1:58.53) and Jemma Reekie (1:58.73).
In addition to her 800m exploits, Moraa took on the 1,000m at the Silesia meeting, finishing third in 2:33.43 behind Jemma (2:32.56) and Nelly Chepchirchir who set a world lead time of 2:31.24.
Meanwhile, Moraa was full of praise for her cousin, Sarah Moraa, who clinched the 800m title at the World Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
“I train with her under coach Alex Sang and I am very proud that she won a gold medal at the World U20 Championships,” Moraa remarked.
Sarah sealed the U20 title in 2:00.36, beating Australia’s Claudia Hollingsworth (2:00.87) and USA’s Sophia Gorriaran (2:01.04).
The senior Moraa is hoping to parade alongside her protege at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
“I have been mentoring her so she can follow in my footsteps. My dream is to race with her on the big stage,” she added.
