Contacted by Médias24, Lhoucine Youabd, head of the communications department at the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), provided a detailed analysis of the current meteorological situation, in particular on the evolution of tropical storm Kirk, which transformed into depression.

He explained that “the storm lost its energy as it crossed the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean”, which led to its transformation into a depression. According to our meteorologist, Kirk will continue to weaken as it heads towards western Europe, bringing rain and strong winds to , Spain and Portugal on Thursday October 10 and Friday October 11.

As far as Morocco is concerned, this depression will lead to indirect effects. “The depression will weaken the Azores High, allowing wetter and cooler air currents to reach the northwest of the country, which could lead to a slight drop in temperatures and some rain,” he said. he clarified.

Lhoucine Youabd also mentioned the possible impact on the state of the sea, forecasting “relatively high waves along the Atlantic coasts until Thursday midday”.

Detailing the forecasts, he indicated that light rains are expected from the afternoon of Wednesday October 9 in the region of Tangier, Loukkos, Western Rif and Saïs. “On Thursday, we expect light and scattered rain over several areas in the North, while in the far South, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds could occur.”

The outlook for the end of the week indicates a possible new disturbed system, with locally heavy showers over the northern and central Atlantic plains, the Rif, the Atlas and the Oriental.

Our interlocutor also wanted to explain the reasons behind the intensification of cyclonic activity observed in the Atlantic during the months of September and October. According to him, “this period coincides with the hurricane seasona period when tropical waves emerge from West Africa to migrate towards the Atlantic.

He pointed out that “the movement of these waves is largely influenced by the surface temperature of the Atlantic Ocean. When this is high enough, it can fuel and intensify these weather systems, thereby strengthening cyclones.” However, Lhoucine Youabd noted that the Atlantic is characterized by cold water surfaces, which tends to limit the power of cyclones. “In these regions, cyclones often lose intensity, sometimes preventing them from maintaining their strength and reaching the American coast,” he concluded.

However, the DGM does not foresee any consequences of cyclone Leslie [qui se déplace au-dessus de l’Atlantique, ndlr] on the Kingdom.
