2024 WAC VB Release Week 6

UT ARLINGTON, UTAH TECH, AND SOUTHERN UTAH SWEEP THE CONFERENCE OPENING WEEKEND

The Mavericks, Trailblazers, and Thunderbirds finished the first week of conference matchups at the top of the standings with 2-0 WAC records. Southern Utah took care of business at home collecting sweeps against Tarleton State and Abilene Christian. Utah Tech also defended its home turf by defeating the Wildcats 3-0 and Texans 3-1. UT Arlington traveled out west and picked up wins at Grand Canyon 3-1 and California Baptist 3-2.

STRONG CONFERENCE START FOR CALIFORNIA BAPTIST

After starting the season winless at 0-12, California Baptist pulled off the upset win against Utah Valley for their first win of the season and swept the Wolverines. The Lancers nearly pulled off another upset win against the standing’s leader UT Arlington but fell in the fifth set 3-2.

LANCERS SET ACES RECORD

In its win against Utah Valley, California Baptist dominated the service game by recording 21 aces, the most in the school’s NCAA-era and the most in a three-set match in the NCAA this year. Five different Lancers recorded multiple aces including Mia Jerue and Gianna Perez who both set the CBU individual single-match D-I record for aces with seven apiece. Jerue’s 26 aces on the season are the second most in the WAC.

MAVERICKS LEADING THE STATISTICS

UT Arlington currently has four leaders in the WAC’s individual statistics. Paige Reagor leads in hitting percentage at .426 (125-24-237), Mollie Blank leads in assists with 510 (10.41/set), and Brianna Ford leads in both kills (220, 4.58/set) and points (259.0, 5.40/set). Ford is inside the top 10 in the country in both kills per set and points per set.

BELLA THE BLOCKING MACHINE

Utah Valley’s Bella Wooden is ranked third in the nation in blocks per set with 1.53. Wooden currently holds 71 block assists and four solo blocks and has recorded at least five blocks in 10 out of 14 matches.
