Luuk de Jong almost managed to score a fabulous goal during his anniversary match for PSV.
For the PSV captain it was a match not to be forgotten: Tuesday evening’s match against Sporting Portugal was his 300th for the club. He almost managed to crown this special milestone with a phenomenal goal.
De Jong was found with a half-high ball by Malik Tillman and then used his left leg to throw the ball over his direct opponent Gonçalo Inácio, who was nailed to the ground. De Jong suddenly found himself face to face with the goalkeeper Franco Israel, but then shot miserably wide with the left.
Ziggo Sport commentator Albert Mantingh was lyrical: ‘Oh, what an assumption and what an action, but he can’t finish it! No 110th Champions League goal for Luuk de Jong in the PSV shirt. How he takes that ball… And then he has to reward himself, but he doesn’t. Improbable, beautifully done. Oh such a shame! Bosz also thinks so.”
De Jong’s tour de force was reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp, who scored against Newcastle United in 2002 after a masterful pirouette.
