Werner clearly: “We were really bad in superior numbers”

Werder Bremen had the chance to win against Dortmund in the first home game of the season. Coach Ole Werner explained after the game why it didn’t work out.

“It felt like there was more in it,” said Mitchell Weiser after the 0-0 draw in the first home game of the season against Dortmund, before highlighting his own performance: “It was a good game from us, we conceded little, but in the end we didn’t get the three points. We had good opportunities ourselves, not 100% chances, but I thought we were more dangerous.”

The wing player saw his team play very well, especially defensively. “We definitely have more to offer offensively,” Weiser also knows. “Draws are always difficult to classify. We could have won both games, but we haven’t lost a game yet,” said the winger, who picked up another point with his team after the 2:2 draw in Augsburg. “We’ve been at 99 percent twice now, now we have to make sure we get to 100 and get the three points.”

The Bremen coach also saw a good game overall against a top team in the league. “We played a very good game in eleven against eleven, we were close to what you need to beat Dortmund,” praised Werner. “We got into good spaces in the final third, but were sometimes sloppy or not so determined in our direct finishing. We missed a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Werner praises the first 70 minutes

From the 73rd minute onwards, Bremen had a great chance to win at home, as Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck was shown the yellow card and Werder were allowed to play with a numerical advantage. But things didn’t go according to plan for SVW. “We were really bad with a numerical advantage and became impatient,” Werner said angrily.

The bottom line is that the coach came to the following conclusion: “We are very, very satisfied with the performance over 70 minutes. We are dissatisfied with the result because we were not able to use the first 70 minutes to our advantage and were then too inaccurate when we had the advantage in numbers.”

Werder can now work on their accuracy, as the next game after the international break is in Mainz in just over two weeks.
