How fans get into the stadium

Bochum. Because the A40 is closed, many VfL Bochum fans have to take long detours today. The club has given them some advice: “Take the train!”

VfL Bochum will play its first home game of the 2024/2025 Bundesliga season on Saturday, August 31 (3:30 p.m./Sky). Fans may encounter some difficulties when driving to the stadium. The A40 “Ruhrstadion” exit is currently closed due to construction work on the Schlachthofbrücke, which is why there are extensive diversions. But there are alternatives.

VfL Bochum generally recommends that its fans avoid traveling by car, says Jonathan Orth, spokesman for VfL Bochum. “In order to avoid delays and hassle, we strongly recommend using public transport and arriving very early,” the club informs fans on its website.

From Bochum city center, for example, tram lines 308 (towards Schürbankstraße) and 316 (towards Heinrichstraße) go to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. It is about 25 minutes on foot from Bochum main station. But VfL Bochum also has tips for drivers.

Before the home game: These are the alternative routes to the Ruhrstadion

Anyone who does arrive by car should use the official alternative routes. These take into account “that during home games, Castroper Strasse in the direction of the city in front of the stadium between Quellenweg and Stadionring is closed from the moment doors open,” says Orth.

Fans driving towards the stadium on the A40 from Essen can drive to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion via Wittener Strasse and Lohring. “Fans coming from Dortmund should take the Sheffield Ring and the Kornharpen exit,” said the VfL spokesman. There could be further delays at the Stadionring/Castroper Strasse intersection due to fan marches, according to VfL on its website.

There will be a separate travel recommendation for away fans. All tickets are sold out – not just the home sections. VfL sold all 2,700 tickets for the away section.

A40 closure and VfL Bochum: “A maximum of five home games affected”

It can be assumed that around 30 percent of fans will travel to the games at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion by car, says Orth. However, this always depends on which day the game is played and what time of year.

The motorway is to be closed for 15 weeks – since the evening of August 6th, the motorway between the Bochum-West triangle and the Bochum-Harpen junction has been completely closed. VfL Bochum has been in contact with the authorities and organizations with security tasks since April of this year and has sought contact with the DFL. “If the construction site stays on schedule,” says Jonathan Orth, “a maximum of five VfL home games will be affected by the construction site.”
