Often mentioned, the former Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior seems to meet the condition set by the President of not gathering a majority against him. A part of the left, the right and the extreme right could hesitate to overthrow him.

Not (yet?) installed, already at the center of attention. Bernard Cazeneuve, whose name keeps coming up to occupy Matignon, would in this case be the subject of a motion of censure brought by France Insoumise (LFI), announced Friday the president of the LFI group in the Assembly, Mathilde Panot. “Of course we would vote for censure against Mr. Cazeneuve”just like “against any government that is not led by Lucie Castets”the NFP candidate for Matignon, whose nomination Emmanuel Macron rejected earlier this week. At the same time, meeting at a summer university in Blois, the socialists informally debated the attitude to take towards a possible government led by François Hollande’s former Prime Minister.

Mentioned for weeks as one of Emmanuel Macron’s possible choices, Cazeneuve, 61, is now the unofficial favorite. “The criterion is not to gather a majority against oneself, and among the names cited, there are some who can meet it”is content to comment on the entourage of the head of state. Certainly, the former mayor of Cherbourg left the PS in 2022, to denounce its alliance with France Insoumise, towards which he is fundamentally hostile.
