Manchester City find themselves forced to play two games in 48 hours after police refused to back down on their decision over the Carabao Cup tie.

City face Watford in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, September 24. But before that, Pep Guardiola’s side face Premier League title rivals Arsenal on Sunday, September 22, before travelling to Newcastle on Saturday, September 28.

By the time the match at the Etihad Stadium against Watford kicks off, it will be just 48 hours since City’s crucial clash with Arsenal ended.

City will have to play two games in two days because Greater Manchester Police refused them permission to play their Carabao Cup home game on Wednesday because it clashed with Manchester United’s Europa League match against FC Twente.

The last time the two Manchester clubs played on the same night at home was almost a decade ago, having not done so since October 2015, when City crushed Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and United lost on penalties to Middlesbrough.

The two matches come during a hectic period, as City will play five matches in 15 days.

City host Inter Milan in the Champions League on September 18, four days before facing Brentford in the Premier League at home after the international break.

Manchester City, who are aiming to win the Premier League title for the fifth time in a row, have made an ideal start to the season after winning their first three matches.
