The Franco-Beninese activist Seba Chemistrypresident of the NGO Pan-Africanist Emergencieswas arrested this Monday, October 14, 2024 in . The information, relayed repeatedly by several media, indicates that the arrest took place in the afternoon while Séba was in a restaurant in the French capital. Since his arrival on French territory on October 10, the activist had been traveling with a Nigerien diplomatic passport.

For the moment, the French authorities have neither officially confirmed nor denied this arrest. The reasons for Kémi Séba’s detention also remain unclear. However, this new episode takes place in a tense context between the activist and the French authorities, due to his virulent criticism of ’s policy in Africa.

A stated opposition to Franco-African relations

Kémi Séba is recognized for his anti-colonialist positions and his fierce opposition to the French presence in Africa, particularly through his speeches against the CFA franc, which he describes as an instrument of economic domination.

In July 2024, an official decree signed by the French authorities announced the forfeiture of his French nationality. The text, dated July 8, 2024, stipulated that Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichialias Kémi Séba, “lost French nationality” following an opinion from the Council of State. This decision was motivated by acts considered contrary to the interests of France.

A controversial but influential personality

Kémi Séba, who became known through the Pan-Africanist movement, is often seen as a controversial figure. Although criticized by some for his methods and his sometimes radical speech, he remains an influential figure in pan-Africanist circles, where he campaigns for the total emancipation of Africa from the former colonial powers. His arrest comes as his actions come under increasing scrutiny, both in Africa and Europe.

The pan-Africanist community is now awaiting more details regarding this arrest, while public opinion is wondering about the precise reasons leading to this detention.
