The positive development of the French position, which reinforces the international dynamic around the question of the Moroccan Sahara, is likely to accelerate and consolidate the strategic and economic partnership between Paris and Rabat, underlined on Saturday the French geopolitologist Aymeric Chauprade.
“Morocco now has a lot of strong support on the subject of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, but concerning France, in addition to the geopolitical dimension, there was an emotional dimension,” noted Mr. Chauprade in a statement to the MAP, in reaction to the speech of HM King Mohammed VI at the opening of the new session of Parliament.
In this speech, the Sovereign welcomed the position of the French Republic which supports the sovereignty of Morocco over the entire territory of the Sahara and which supports the Autonomy Initiative within the framework of Moroccan territorial integrity, as the only basis for the settlement of this artificial regional conflict.

“The history between our two countries adds an emotional dimension and Moroccans have long been incomprehensible regarding French hesitations. The situation is now clarified and this will make it possible to accelerate and consolidate the strategic and economic partnership between our two countries,” added the former French MEP.
While welcoming the “excellent” decision of French President Emmanuel Macron in this regard, the analyst stressed that it is “an essential and very positive decision for our two countries”.
“This decision is fair on the level of international law, on the level of geopolitics, and in accordance with the long duration of History, because the Sahara has always been Moroccan. It is also consistent with the interests of France, which must help Morocco consolidate its sovereignty, because it is in everyone’s interest to have a stable Saharan and Sahelian region,” he said.
