Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has been dramatically criticised by legendary commentator Martin Tyler.
The 24-year-old, who scored his 10th Manchester City hat-trick during Saturday’s 4-1 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium, has moved to within six goals of the century mark for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Haaland moved to east Manchester from Borussia Dortmund in July 2022 for £51 million, and has scored 94 goals in 101 appearances for the Sky Blues to date, alongside winning seven different trophies – including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
The Norway international has won the Premier League Golden Boot award in successive seasons, and has already scored four goals in the division so far this season, having also netted during Manchester City’s win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Haaland took just 18 minutes to open his goalscoring account for the campaign in west London, fending off Marc Cucurella to roll the Blues into an early lead against Enzo Maresca’s side.
The striker scored 38 goals for Manchester City last season, having previously netted 52 goals in 53 appearances during his maiden campaign at the Etihad Stadium.
The prolific goalscorer has been subject to surprise criticism however, including from legendary commentator Martin Tyler, who questioned the overall performance of Haaland following the opening weekend win over Chelsea.
“The goals and the medals and the money all make it work, but it’s no way to play football,” claimed the former Sky Sports commentator.
“Haaland, he’s such a good player and he gets so few touches because of the way Manchester City play. I don’t know how he manages on this. He had one touch of the ball between the 18th and the 52nd minute, completed three passes throughout the game, one dribble, one goal.”
Haaland will be looking to add to his goal tally against West Ham on Saturday evening, with the 24-year-old’s first Manchester City goal having come at the London Stadium back in August 2022.
