French double with the title for Bosredon and silver for Quaile in para-cycling

Mathieu Bosredon won the Paralympic title in para-cycling on the road in the road race (category H3) ahead of his compatriot Johan Quaile.

Mathieu Bosredon and Johan Quaile finished in the top two places in the Paralympic cycling H3 road race on Thursday in Clichy-sous-bois, matching their performance in the time trial on Wednesday. With these 54th and 55th medals, Tokyo’s performance was equal to the number of French medals.

Largely favourite after his victory the day before in the time trial, already ahead of Johan Quaile, Mathieu Bosredon immediately showed that he was in good shape by taking more than a minute’s lead at the end of the first of four laps over a chasing group, which included his compatriot.

But he punctured in the second, having to drive for several kilometres with a flat tyre and losing time for the French staff to change it.

No matter: he started behind the group, quickly made up for lost time and, without waiting, took off again in the lead. Johan Quaile followed him a little and, even though he was dropped, it was enough for him to open up a gap with the other riders. The fourth and final 14-kilometre loop had the feel of a lap of honour.

Bosredon finished 1 minute 21 seconds ahead of Quaile. The H3 category is for paraplegic cyclists without voluntary mobility of the trunk.

The race brings the day’s medal total to four for road cycling, and to 22 for the entire cycling delegation (track and road) since the start of the Games, more than a third of all French medals.
