Donald Trump and Kamala Harris react to Georgia high school shooting

The Democratic candidate and the Republican candidate condemned this Wednesday, September 4, the shooting that occurred during the day at Apalachee High School in the city of Winder. At least four people died, killed by a 14-year-old teenager.

A new tragedy in the United States. A 14-year-old teenager opened fire in a high school in Georgia, northeast of Atlanta, killing at least four people and injuring nine others, according to a report released by the authorities this Wednesday, September 4, early afternoon.

The tragedy comes two months before the US presidential election, which will pit Republican Donald Trump against Democrat Kamala Harris. Both politicians reacted after news of the shooting broke, with Trump calling the shooter a “sick, deranged monster.”

“These beloved children were taken from us far too soon,” the Republican presidential candidate lamented on his network, Truth Social.

“It is simply outrageous that every day in our country, in the United States, parents have to send their children to school wondering whether they will come back alive or not,” said Kamala Harris during a rally organized this Wednesday in North Hampton, New Hampshire, in the northeast of the country.

After addressing her thoughts to the victims, the Democratic candidate called for “putting an end” to gun violence and these killings, according to comments reported by CNN.

Joe Biden “horrified”

“Across the country, students are learning to hide instead of reading and writing. We cannot continue to accept this as normal,” White House tenant Joe Biden also reacted, saying he was “horrified.” US Attorney General Merrick Garland also deplored a “terrible tragedy” during a press conference.

The official did not provide a death toll, but Georgia state authorities told X that four people died and nine others were taken to hospitals in the Atlanta area. While rumors of other school shootings in the area have been denied, those have been denied.

The United States is the only developed country in the world to regularly suffer from school shootings, a scourge fueled by the spread of small arms. In May 2022, 19 children and two teachers were victims of a horrific massacre at their school in Uvalde, Texas, committed by an 18-year-old using a legally purchased assault rifle.

US President Joe Biden has repeatedly decried the “epidemic” of gun violence and regularly urged Congress to act. Now, the number of victims or the circumstances must be particularly high for a shooting to generate national media attention.
