75-year-old twins who had been squatting in a cellar since 2022 have died

As the two sisters did not want to leave the building in which they were born, the situation had become absurd and hopeless.

The Figaro Nice

Twins Simone and Christiane Aubert, 75, who had been illegally occupying the cellar of a building in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) for almost two years, have both died, the town hall said, confirming information from the regional daily. Nice Morning. The first lost her life at the beginning of May, the second in August, we are told. Since October 2022, these two women had been “squatting” in the basement of a residence. The situation had become at the very least absurd, if not “unlivable” according to several tenants.

The sisters had been evicted from their apartment by the new owner who wanted to undertake renovation work. They had lived there, like their parents, as caretakers since they were born. During work in the building and in this apartment, they had taken up residence in the cellar, refusing to move away, even temporarily, from these homes for emotional reasons, as they explained. On several occasions, and despite the presence of workers, they had even tried to move back in despite the rehousing solutions offered by the various social services.

Refusal of help

Nothing worked: the two sisters did not want to leave for anything in the world, to the point of living in unsanitary conditions, in the dark, without water or electricity in the immense basement of this modern and art deco building, renovated in a Nice style. They slept there on a mattress, in the middle of their personal belongings which were piled up everywhere. It was known among the residents that no form of hygiene was maintained.

No compromise could be found with the city services despite multiple attempts, the two women refusing any form of help. Two reports from the municipal social action center and the regional health agency had even ended up being sent to the public prosecutor of Nice. But as they seemed to want, the twins ended their day in the building of their lives.
