These 49 sites are considered “dangerous”

The kingdom is bracing for severe weather this week, with authorities identifying areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides, including some in Phuket.

Heavy rains, storms, thunderstorms… If you are currently traveling in Thailand, floods and landslides could ruin your stay in the coming days. While the kingdom is expecting a second wave of bad weather conditions this week (after the one at the end of August), the Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand published on Tuesday, September 3, a list of 49 areas particularly vulnerable to these risks.

Among the sites deemed “dangerous” are the old town and the Chartered Bank district of Phuket island, one of the most visited by tourists. Water levels in 11 provinces in the Chao Phraya River basin, including the capital Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, are expected to rise by up to 40 centimeters.

Tourists killed by landslide

Floods caused by torrential rains killed 22 people in the week of August 19, including a tourist couple who were victims of a landslide in a residential area on the island of Phuket. Following these tragedies, tourism stakeholders in the affected regions have called on the government to put in place infrastructure against the risks of flooding.
