Russian strikes in Lviv and Kryvyi Rih, cascading resignations of Ukrainian ministers… News on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia this Wednesday, September 4 – Libération

Russian strike on Lviv kills at least seven

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, a new massive attack was carried out by the Russian army on Ukrainian territory. In Lviv, in the west of the country, at least 7 people were killed and the provisional toll communicated by the authorities this Wednesday, September 4 in the early morning continues to evolve. More than 40 civilians were also injured. On social networks, many videos are shared. The bombing took place in a residential area in the west of the city, not far from the central station. The fires caused by the various missile strikes and drone raids spread to the adjoining buildings. Around fifty buildings were damaged. After the images of the flames devouring the buildings during the night, there followed those of gutted homes still smoking and ruins littering the streets. Located more than 1,000 km from the front and only 70 km from Poland, the Ukrainian city of 700,000 inhabitants has so far been relatively spared by the war. The deadliest attack on Lviv dates back to July 2023 when a Russian missile killed 10 people and injured more than 40.

This new Russian attack comes the day after the one carried out against the city of Poltava, in the east of the country. A particularly deadly bombing: 51 people were killed and more than 200 injured.

In Kryvyi Rih, a missile injures five people after hitting a residential area

More than 60 km north of the territories occupied by Russia, the city of Kryvyi Rih was also targeted by the Russian army. Five people were injured, including a ten-year-old child. Several residential buildings were hit by the gunfire. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown has been targeted more than once by Russian forces. On August 26, a Russian missile fell on the city, killing at least four people and injuring five.

In Kyiv, cascading resignations and political crisis to come

A major figure in Ukrainian politics is about to leave President Zelensky’s government. On Wednesday morning, the Ukrainian press announced the resignation of the head of diplomacy, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Rada (the Ukrainian parliament), confirmed the information, specifying that Kuleba’s potential resignation would be “examined at one of the next plenary meetings”without providing a date.

Tuesday had already been marked by an avalanche of resignations and readjustments. Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister of Strategic Industries, Denys Maliouska, Minister of Ecology, Ruslan Strilets, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna, but above all Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration, all submitted their resignations.

Vitaliy Koval, head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine (SPFU), is also leaving his post, just nine months after taking office. The major upheavals at the top of the country come amid a surge in Russian missile strikes on cities across Ukraine in recent weeks and a worsening energy crisis.
