First autopsies confirm drowning theory

The bodies of American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were the first to be autopsied.

More than two weeks after the sinking of the yacht “Bayesian” off the coast of Porticello in Sicily, the sixth body, the Italian authorities carried out on Tuesday September 3 the first autopsies of the six bodies found in the days that followed around the wreck.

As reported by the Associated Press, the bodies of American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were autopsied on Tuesday. The medical examiners appointed by the Palermo prosecutor’s office concluded that both had indeed died of drowning.

On Wednesday, the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy, are to be examined. As for billionaire Mike Lynch’s autopsy, this should take place at a later date, the American media outlet also points out.

Investigation in progress

In the days following the sinking, long and difficult search operations were put in place. The specialist divers initially had difficulty penetrating the wreck due to “the presence of furniture obstructing the entrance”.

As for the investigations, an inquiry has been opened for involuntary manslaughter by negligence and Captain James Cutfield, a New Zealand citizen who is among the 15 survivors, is at the centre of the questions.

Engineer Tim Parker Eaton, who was in charge of the engine room that night, and seaman Matthew Griffith, who was on watch, are now also under investigation.
