How to clean your toilet brush?

The toilet brush is constantly exposed to bacteria and dirt. How to wash it and with which products? How to maintain the brush container? When to replace it? Our answers.

The toilet brush should be cleaned and disinfected regularly to prevent the proliferation of germs and bacteria. Discover the best practices for maintaining and disinfecting it.

How to maintain the toilet brush?

Maintain your toilet brush easily using natural products. Before you begin, wear gloves to protect your skin from cleaning agents. For a deep clean, several solutions are available to you.

In a bucket or basin, pour one liter of water, add 150 ml of white vinegar 50 ml of black soap and 50 g of soda crystals . Dip the brush in this solution and let it soak for 30 minutes. Then, rinse it thoroughly with clean water and clean the handle with a paper towel soaked in white vinegar. White vinegar degreases and disinfects, black soap cleans gently, and soda crystals eliminate bacteria.

Use some Marseille soapknown for its purifying properties. Put a teaspoon of soap flakes in a bucket with warm water and let the brush soak for 20 minutes before rinsing. You can also combine Marseille soap with white vinegar. Mix the two in a container, immerse the brush in it, and let it act for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing.

You can also opt for baking soda, which is excellent for eliminating bad odors and disinfecting in depth. Pour a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl, then soak the brush for 1 to 2 hours.

For even more intensive cleaning, the sodium percarbonate can be used. This product is a powerful bleaching and disinfecting agent, particularly effective for removing stubborn stains. Mix it with warm water, then soak the brush for a sparkling clean.

Finally, essential oils, such as tea tree or lavender oil, can be added to your cleaning solution. They enhance the disinfecting action while providing a pleasant scent. One or two drops are enough for optimal effect. Regardless of the method chosen, clean your toilet brush at least once a week to ensure optimal hygiene.

What product should I put in the brush container?

To keep a toilet brush clean and avoid unpleasant odors, you also need to regularly maintain the container. A simple and effective method is to use white vinegar or a disinfectant such as toilet gel specially designed for this purpose. Pour some into the bottom of the brush holder.

When you deep clean the brush, take the opportunity to also clean the brush holder by immersing them in a mixture of white vinegar and hot water, or boiling water with black soap. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight for optimal cleaning. After soaking, rinse the brush and its holder thoroughly with hot water, then let them air dry. Make sure they are completely dry before storing them, to avoid the proliferation of bacteria due to humidity.

How often should you change your toilet brush?

Even if you regularly disinfect your toilet brush, it is recommended to replace it every 6 months. Over time, even with frequent cleaning, the brush accumulates bacteria and can become a source of bad odors. To avoid this, a six-monthly renewal is essential.

The brush pot also needs to be maintained. If you are using a plastic model, it is advisable to change it every year. However, you can extend its lifespan by washing and disinfecting it daily. To reduce waste, you can opt for a brush with a detachable and replaceable head, while keeping the handle, especially if it is made of stainless steel or glass.

In summary, to maintain good hygiene in your toilet, remember to change the brush every six months and maintain or replace the pot regularly. This not only keeps your bathroom clean, but also limits the proliferation of harmful bacteria.
