Broholmer: origin, size and character

Both calm and robust, the broholmer is a large dog. Origins, physical characteristics, food, health… what do you need to know before welcoming a broholmer into your home?

The Broholmer is a mastiff-type dog that was used for hunting and as a guard dog. This breed almost disappeared after the Second World War.

Origins

The Broholmer originates from Denmark. Appearing in the Middle Ages, it was used to help hunt deer. Century after century, this dog was used to protect large properties. It was not until the 19th century that it wase century for a Danish archaeologist and landowner to work on preserving the Broholmer. It was in this context that breeding of this breed began. Weakened by the Second World War, the latter regained its former glory in the 1970s. It was recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1982.

Massive and muscular, the Broholmer measures between 70 and 75 cm at the withers. A male can weigh up to 70 kg and a female up to 60 kg. This large dog, with a fawn coat and a black mask, has a short coat and a thick undercoat. Depending on the dog, white markings are located on the chest, legs and tip of the tail.

What are the other physical characteristics of the Broholmer? Its head is broad, its tail is set low, its body is long, and its neck is powerful. Finally, the eyes of this dog are round and medium in size. The tones vary between light amber and dark amber.

The Broholmer is an excellent family dog. Calm, affectionate, tender, this four-legged companion is nonetheless dynamic and courageous! He tends to be wary of people he does not know. Protective, obedient and intelligent, he needs firm and caring training. A dog trainer will help you set limits for your dog, without rushing him.

If you are planning to adopt a Broholmer, a house with a garden is necessary. Your pet must be able to let off steam and have fun in large spaces. He will not be happy in an apartment, unless you walk him for long periods of time and daily.

Prix

A Broholmer costs between €1,500 and €2,000. Add to that the annual maintenance costs: lessons with a trainer, vet appointments, possible care costs, quality food, etc. The diet must be adapted to the age, size and habits of the dog. Also put some money aside in case of unforeseen events such as injuries.

Health

Overall, the Broholmer has a robust health. It can live between 10 and 12 years. Among the major pathologies is hip or elbow dysplasia. These progressive malformations can cause osteoarthritis if they are not relieved. Weight control is essential, as is the administration of anti-inflammatories. If you have a Broholmer, also monitor the diet to avoid the risk of obesity. Do not hesitate to ask a veterinarian for advice on the brands of kibble and the daily quantity.
