10-year-old shoots dead former mayor and his daughter in Louisiana

In the United States, a ten-year-old boy is accused of shooting dead an 82-year-old former mayor and his 31-year-old daughter. The circumstances of these events are still unclear.

“Our city is in shock.” In Minden, Louisiana, in the United States, law enforcement officers have arrested a ten-year-old boy. The boy is suspected of shooting dead a former mayor and his daughter whose bodies were found on Sunday, September 1.

The victims were former Louisiana Mayor Joe Cornelius, 82, and his daughter, Keisha Miles, 31. Their bodies were found riddled with multiple gunshot wounds. A six-year-old child, who was unharmed, was also present at the time of the shooting.

Local police chief Jared McIver identified the boy as a relative of the former city councilman, according to NBC News. But McIver declined to provide further details about their parentage. He also did not elaborate on the motives behind the shooting.

“Our city is in shock. How can a 10-year-old child commit such a malicious act?” the sheriff lamented.

In custody for murder

The boy’s future looks complex. He is currently being held for first-degree murder, or assassination, and according to the press, does not have a lawyer to represent him, at least at this stage. During an initial interrogation, he also denied being the author of the shots, before confessing in the presence of his grandmother.

Minden Mayor Joe Cornelius’ successor sent his thoughts to the victims. “Joe Cornelius’ years of service to Minden were marked by his commitment and dedication to the betterment of our community,” “let’s come together as a community to honor Joe’s memory and support one another in this time of grief,” Nick Cox said in a statement carried by The Associated Press.
