Ticket website outages and more expensive seats than advertised upset fans – Libération

Fans have been fantasizing about the reformation of the legendary group Oasis for years, while yet another falling out has been pitting brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher against each other since 2009. The announcement on Tuesday of the return of the iconic Britpop group for a series of 17 concerts in the United Kingdom and Ireland has logically led to a rush on ticket sales. Millions of people rushed to sales platforms this Saturday, August 31 in the morning to try to get their hands on the famous sesame.

But, completely overwhelmed by the crowds, sites like Gigs and Tours or SeeTickets were inaccessible before the sale even began, asking fans to be patient but struggling to restore access. A spokesperson for Ticketmaster UK, the largest sales platform, assured that the site “worked”with “millions of fans […] placed in a queue” virtual. “A few tickets are still available, but in very limited quantity” and only in some categories, displayed the site in the middle of the day.

Prices that range from single to double

Many fans, however, were unpleasantly surprised to discover when accessing the ticket purchase page, often after several hours of waiting, that the price had almost doubled due to a strong “demand”. “That feeling when you queue for four hours only to find out that the ticket price has gone from £148 to… £355??? Because they’re in high demand. How is that not illegal?” an Internet user on X protested.

Accused of being responsible, Ticketmaster UK indicates on its website that “the event organizer set the price of these places according to their market value,” instead shifting the responsibility to the tour promoters.

Another hiccup: some fans were abruptly sent to the back of the line without any explanation. “Unfortunately, Oasis has already broken up while you were waiting.”, joked an Internet user on the X network, where the thousands of humorous diversions quickly gave way to real bitterness.

Tickets already on resale

Irish fans also lamented “absolute madness” to open an hour before the sale for the two Dublin dates, for which it is currently no longer possible to buy a ticket. The day before, a few people had in fact been able to buy exclusive tickets after being drawn for a pre-sale. And given the craze, some of them were quick to try to resell them for several thousand pounds.

“Please note that tickets can ONLY be resold at face value via Ticketmaster and Twickets. Tickets sold in breach of the terms and conditions will be cancelled by the organisers”warned the group on its X account.

Oasis will perform in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin, and have added three more dates to the 14 originally scheduled, representing nearly 1.4 million tickets, according to the BBC. For what is already shaping up to be a historic tour, the cheapest tickets were initially announced at around £75 (€89) for a seat in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff, and £150 (€178) in the pit.
