The European Union intends to take new sanctions against Russian ships. The announcement comes as Finland is investigating an oil tanker that left a Russian port for what it considers to be the “sabotage” of an underwater electrical cable linking it to Estonia.
On Christmas Day, the EstLink 2 direct current link connecting the two countries was disconnected from the network, Finnish operator Fingrid announced. An investigation was immediately launched. The disturbance was localized on Thursday, according to Fingrid.
“The suspicious ship is part of Russia's ghost fleet, which threatens security and the environment, while financing Russia's war budget, warns the European Commission. We will propose further measures, including sanctions, to target this fleet.”
