Secretary-General deplores plane crash in Kazakhstan

The UN chief and two UN agencies expressed sadness and solidarity with those affected.

According to the Azerbaijani airline, the plane was diverted from its original route due to fog. Video footage taken by people on the ground shows the plane caught fire while attempting an emergency landing.

The reason for the accident will be clarified when information from the plane's black box, which was recovered, is analyzed.

Among the victims are citizens of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation.

Solidarity with affected nations

The United Nations Secretary-General deeply regretted the incident and expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

Guterres also expressed solidarity with the affected nations and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the tragic incident.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) joined the Secretary-General in expressing sadness at the loss of life in the crash of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243.

She described the event as “tragic” and offered her condolences to the bereaved.

For its part, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) expressed its sadness at the plane crash and joined the condolences sent to all the affected families.

“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. We wish the injured a speedy recovery,” UNICEF said.
