Urgent: Defuse tensions in the Middle East

BEIJING, Dec. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ – A People's Daily report highlights the situation in Syria, which has seen striking developments in recent days, adding to the uncertainty of an already fragile security landscape in the Middle East . This once again reminds the international community that the security disorder in this region cannot continue without limit, and that it is crucial to defuse tensions.

For thirteen years, the Syrian population has endured incessant wars and conflicts. Syria now finds itself at a turning point, and the future depends on the choices of all parties involved.

To stabilize the situation in Syria, it is essential that the international community effectively respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country. It should support Syria in its quest for peace as soon as possible, implement Security Council Resolution 2254, and promote a national political process in line with the Syrian-led and Syrian-owned principle. It is also necessary to develop a reconstruction plan that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people through inclusive dialogue.

It is imperative that the international community sincerely respects the choice of Syrians and establishes conditions conducive to the restoration of peace and order in Syria.

To end the plight of Syrians, all countries must come together to provide relief to Syria, alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis and prevent the re-emergence of a Syrian refugee crisis.

The international community must pay attention to the threats posed by terrorism and extremist forces following recent changes in Syria. Syria's future must be marked by firm opposition to all forms of terrorism and extremism.

Instability and frequent conflicts in the Middle East seriously affect international peace and security. Since the start of the conflicts in Gaza, the region has been plagued by a multiplication of crises, notably the conflicts between Israel and Palestine, but also with Lebanon and Iran, without forgetting the tensions in the Red Sea and the recent upheavals in Syria.

According to a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a British think tank, this year has been marked by a significant escalation of armed conflict in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, with an increase of 315 % of fatalities linked to violent events.

The Middle East, which has been a center of civilization in human history, must in no way turn into a place of absent peace in our current times. Concrete measures are therefore essential to defuse tensions.

To resolve the chaos in the Middle East, the priority is to immediately establish a ceasefire, end the violence and alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

Security cannot be achieved by force, and using violence to end violence only creates more problems. All parties concerned must respect UN Security Council resolutions, stop actions that contribute to escalating regional tensions, and avoid erecting new obstacles to achieving a ceasefire.

Countries with significant influence on the security of the Middle East must act responsibly, refrain from dangerous maneuvers that aggravate the situation, and play a constructive role in easing conflicts.

Humanitarian issues in conflict zones must not be politicized, and the lives of civilians must not be used as an instrument of negotiation. All parties involved must fulfill their obligations in accordance with international humanitarian law, help improve the humanitarian situation and alleviate the suffering of the people in the region.

The fundamental way out of the chaos in the Middle East is to support a political settlement and resume dialogue and negotiations.

The UN Security Council must assume responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East, and all members of this council must actively contribute to this goal.

They should continue their efforts for dialogue and consultation, maintain the momentum of regional reconciliation fostered by the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, resolve differences through inclusiveness, strengthen mutual trust through cooperation, and build a new sustainable security architecture in the Middle East, taking into account everyone's concerns.

The two-state solution must be implemented quickly to prevent the Palestinian issue from being marginalized again.

The Middle East belongs to the people of this region, and the future and destiny of the countries concerned should long have been in the hands of the local people.

The international community should sincerely respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional countries, abide by the merits of relevant cases and international fairness and justice, and assist rather than replace regional countries in their pursuit of solutions to conflicts.

It remains essential that the international community work together to encourage all countries in the Middle East to put aside past feuds and resolve their disputes. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible power, China always stands for peace, fairness and justice, and will continue to play a constructive role in defusing the situation in the Middle East. -East and maintain regional peace and stability.
