The students of the “management of natural environments and wildlife” of the vocational high school of the Territoires of Le Montat were on deck, Thursday, December 19, to carry out the first plantations of the future urban forest, on the site of the old dairy , Pal plain in Cahors. Supervised by their teachers, under the supervision of the green spaces department of the city of Cahors, they started their arboricultural work by planting shrub hedges and by installing the wooden gable that will surround the site, to protect it from trampling and thus guaranteeing the development and growth of plants.
A second day of planting, this time trees, is already scheduled for January. In total, 740 trees, including 270 oaks and 300 shrubs, will be introduced onto the 7,300 m2 plot. A grassy meadow area will also be preserved over a few hundred square meters.
An inventory and monitoring of biodiversity
The agreement concluded by the city of Cahors with the Montat agricultural high school concerns the creation of these plantations as part of a school project, but also the production of an inventory of the initial state of biodiversity and monitoring. regular evolution of biodiversity (fauna/flora) over the years.
The analysis of biodiversity carried out upstream with different partners made it possible to confirm the species to be planted and to identify local species adapted to the pedoclimatic conditions of the site and making it possible to ultimately form all the strata of a forest, all while preserving what exists.
Restoration of biodiversity, recreation of a forest ecosystem, CO2 capture… this urban forest project which is located on the route of the future greenway aims to respond to the challenges of ecological transition, while improving the well-being of residents and walkers.
