A dog with a mutilated muzzle and a cancer survivor takes her revenge on life

Mila was at the bottom of the wave, but this dog, battered by life and victim of cruelty, is doing much better today thanks to the outpouring of solidarity she generated.

She had been saved from wandering the streets of Brownsville in Texas (United States). Taken in by a local shelter, she bore the after-effects of the terrible abuse she had been subjected to. According to witnesses, she had, in fact, been hit with a baseball bat.

Mila had a fractured upper jaw with necrotic tissue. An open wound had formed there.

The reception structure that housed her could not treat her. She launched a call for help via social networks and an association based more than 1,600 kilometers away responded. It is about Stray Paws Rescuehas Saint Peters in Missouri.

The team was ready to welcome her, but first the question of transporting the dog had to be resolved. The latter was finally done by air. “ Rather than putting him through the stress of a 15 or 16 hour car ride, we were able to find a plane with Pilots n' Paws to help him get here “, explain Linda Roeverresponsible at Stray Paws Rescuehas First Alert 4.

Lori Alden was at the airport St. Louis to take Mila in charge upon arrival. This volunteer did not hesitate to travel from Florida to carry out this mission.

Challenges that she met with flying colors

Examinations carried out by veterinarians revealed that Mila carried the “heartworm”, the parasite responsible for heartworm disease. As she began treatment, they also discovered she had cancer. Several months of chemotherapy followed.

« It was very scary before her reconstructive surgery because she had a hole in the top of her mouth. So every time I fed her I was afraid she would suck “, tell Lori Alden.

After the chemotherapy sessions were completed, the dog underwent reconstructive surgery at the University of Missouri Veterinary School. Thanks to this, Mila once again has a functional nose and snout, allowing him to breathe, eat and drink properly.

« She's been through so much and she's so attached to me. I can't imagine putting her through having to leave me because she trusted me so much and I didn't disappoint her », confides Lori Alden.
