Parcels, of all sizes and coming from all over the world on impressive conveyor belts, a brand new platform at the cutting edge of technology and already well-oiled mechanics: the brand new multi-flow platform of the Saint-Pierre-lès Post Office Nemours (Seine-et-Marne), in service since the beginning of August only, running at full speed. It must be said that the date is approaching: this Tuesday, December 24, all packages sent on Friday must be under the customers' tree: “It's a promise we make to our customers, and we will keep it. We are very confident,” explains Gaëtan Lemaire, director of the platform.
We had to quickly get our bearings and adapt to a completely new configuration: a huge and brand new premises, a new internal organization which disrupted the daily lives of many sorting agents and postmen.
A logistical and organizational challenge that became necessary: “A good part of our costs relate to transport,” explains Gaëtan Lemaire. By closing the Château-Landon, La Chapelle-la-Reine and Nemours sites, we will make big savings. It is estimated that there will be 172 tonnes less CO2 emitted, and 273,000 kilometers per year! “.
We learned quickly
On site, this Thursday, December 19 in the evening, a new day as part of the “peak period”, translate “peak period”, ends peacefully. Parcels, by the hundreds, parade on the carpetsflashed, then methodically arranged by the agents, who seem to be playing a giant Tetris! The goal: to create real walls of packages, leaving as little space as possible between each one, so that the trucks can leave without wasting space. In total, the platform processes parcels from 221 municipalities, half of which are from Yonne. So obviously, the Christmas period is busy: “We multiply the volume by 2.5. It was expected, we adapted our schedules to have a greater scope of treatment and not be surprised.”
The platform is therefore set up to cope with this influx, which actually began at the start of Black Friday: “We live to the rhythms of the promotional seasons. We know that the volume will drop drastically from Tuesday.”
Modern and secure
Challenges had to be taken up. This platform, although it is not the largest in the region, has the particularity of managing parcels and mail, hence its name multiflow. Here, everything is modern and secure. The comfort of the agents is also at the heart of the concerns, with a journey of the different packages which is carried out at eye level and gently. Received at the beginning of August, La Poste put its platform into service on Monday August 5 : “It wasn't too much to have a month in advance before the start of the school year, it allowed us to be ready. We learned quickly.”
Enough to cope, therefore with the Christmas rush, within a tool which will have cost 1.3 million euros in material at the Post Office: “This will be amortized over four years thanks to savings on transport. We chose French equipment, at the cutting edge of technology.”
An optimized organization which will necessarily impact the quality of service: “We can accept later deliveries. In fact, this means that we will be able to achieve the objective of delivering on D + 1 in 80% of cases.”
The platform in figures
– A surface area of 5,000 m2
– 172 tonnes of CO2 and 273,000 km saved
– 85 municipalities in Seine-et-Marne and 126 in Yonne covered
– 400,000 packages processed during the first three months of operation
– 5,000 packages processed per week on average
– 650 voltaic panels placed on the roof of the platform
– 110 agents on site per day
– An investment of 1.3 million euros for equipment
– 15 new direct jobs created and 10 indirect
– 20 Zero Emission Kangoos, 3 cargo bikes and 2 electrically assisted bikes.
For mail carriers, the commissioning of the platform will also be the start of a new era: they are trained and authorized to provide local services such as delivering meals to the home or social monitoring for the elderly. . All in a building of high environmental quality, with a negative carbon impact. I promise, this year, Santa won't be late.
