INSEE, the national institute of statistics and economic studies, has published its latest report concerning the reference population in 2022 which will come into force on January 1, 2025.
In Ain, two municipalities are experiencing a significant increase in the number of inhabitants.
Saint-Genis-Pouilly gains the most inhabitants
Indeed, the living areas located around Lake Geneva are the most dynamic in the region. The population thus increases by 1.7% to 2.5% per year on average in those of Saint‑Genis‑Pouilly and Ferney‑Voltaire in Ainbut also Cruseilles, Douvaine, Bons-en-Chablais and Saint-Julien-en-Genevois in Haute-Savoie.
Saint-Genis-Pouilly now has 14,584 inhabitants, compared to 11,892 in 2016 and less than 10,000 in 2009. This is the highest growth for a municipality in Ain.
Ferney-Voltaire is also experiencing an increase in its population, but less significant than Saint-Genis-Pouilly. The city will have 11,530 inhabitants in 2022 compared to 9,637 in 2016 and 8,542 in 2009.
Around Lyon, demographic growth is also strong, particularly in the living areas of Meximieux (Ain), Charvieu-Chavagneux and Lentilly (from +1.5% to +1.8%).
Ain gains inhabitants
Over the period 2016-2022, Haute‑Savoie gains 8,000 inhabitants on average per year, this development placing it 6th among metropolitan departments. It is followed by Ain (11th), Rhône (16th), Savoie (21st) and Isère (24th). Except in Savoie, these departments are characterized by a high natural balance, between +0.28% in Ain and +0.61% in Rhône.
In this department, the high natural balance is accompanied by a zero migratory balance, unlike Ain, Haute‑Savoie and Savoie for which new inhabitants are more numerous than those who leave to live elsewhere.
In total, Ain has 671,289 inhabitants in 2022.
