Families of Israeli hostages seek support in Morocco

Representatives of the families of Israeli hostages traveled to Morocco to pressure their government to reach a deal with Hamas and gain support from the international community. Their visit took place with the holding of a session of the Socialist International, hosted until last Sunday by the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) in Rabat.

In the capital, the Israeli delegation met with Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, vice-president of the Socialist International. She called for the “release of all civilian detainees who are victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” The official stressed the importance of the meeting of the international community in Morocco, a country that bridges Europe and Africa, to face the atrocities of war but seek peaceful solutions.

As such, he expressed hope for a humanitarian release of detainees, suggesting that many could return home by Christmas. As leader of progressive parties in Latin America and the Caribbean, Moreno Cárdenas said it was possible to reach a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and the Gaza Strip. He mentioned the possible participation of the president of the Socialist International, the president of the Spanish government Pedro Sánchez, to facilitate this process.

Highlighting the urgency of peace, Moreno Cárdenas said: “We must all intensify our efforts, each from our respective positions, to reach agreements that allow both peoples to breathe in peace and harmony.”

Last November, the Forum of Families and Israeli Missing Persons launched an appeal for the intervention of King Mohammed VI, president of the Al-Quds Committee.
