Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday indicated “progress” towards an agreement on the hostages held in Gaza, one of the preconditions for a ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Monday, December 23, with “caution”, of “progress” for an agreement on the hostages held in the Gaza Strip since the attack by Palestinian Hamas in October 2023, one of the conditions for a ceasefire.
Indirect negotiations last week in Qatar between Israel and Hamas, with Doha and Egypt as mediators, revived hopes of an agreement on a truce and a release of hostages in Gaza.
“Everything we do cannot be revealed, but we are acting to bring them home,” Benjamin Netanyahu said during a speech in Parliament.
“I would like to say cautiously that progress has been made and that we will not stop until they all return,” added the head of government, without specifying on which points the discussions had progressed.
During the unprecedented attack by the Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023 on Israeli soil, 251 people were kidnapped. Among them, 96 remain hostages in Gaza, including 34 declared dead by the army.
No truce since the end of November 2023
Washington is pushing in particular to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
