A few days after recovering a 6th Olympic gold medal after the rejection of Evgeny Ustyugov's appeal, Martin Fourcade spoke about this rather particular situation.

Retired for a few years now, Martin Fourcade continues… to collect titles. Indeed, 14 years later, the French biathlete recently won the gold medal in the mass start at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Until then a silver medalist, the Catalan finally won gold because the appeal of Russian Evgeny Ustyugov was officially rejected at the end of November by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). As a result, Fourcade has recently had six gold charms during the Olympics, having won seven in all. “It’s a bit of an eccentric situation, but my first reaction is that the fight against doping is working, even 15 years later. So it's very good, it keeps an eye out for cheaterseven more than a decade later,” said the main person concerned, about this success obtained when he retired from sports in 2020.

“It steals part of my identity as a biathlete”

« The ability to be able to win in three different Games means a lot to me, in my ability to have made a mark on my sport. If I'm proud, it's because it means I won gold medals in three different editions of the Olympic Games, so it's a major achievement for me. (…) It makes me weird. I built my career by making money in Vancouver. I was still a kid and I think that this silver medal made me hungry, made me want to go for gold in Sochi four years later, Fourcade later explained on the microphone from Eurosport. (…) It's complicated to tell myself that my career and my life could have been different if I had won gold in 2010. Yes, I'm happy, but in a way it steals part of my identity as a biathlete, of my DNA. » As a reminder, the French biathlete was also Olympic champion twice in Sochi (in the individual and the pursuit) and three times in Pyeongchang (in the pursuit, the mass start and the mixed relay).
