Relatives of Israeli hostages held by Hamas participated in a meeting of the Socialist International (SI) in Rabat, calling for international mobilization for the release of their loved ones. This moment of exchange served as a reminder of the extent of the human suffering generated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for the populations of both camps and the need to implement urgent humanitarian solutions.
The Socialist International, an international political organization bringing together the world's main socialist, social democratic and labor parties, as well as some democratic parties, met in the Moroccan capital to discuss the current geopolitical crises. Among the themes discussed, the situation in Israel and Palestine occupied a central place, in particular the dramatic consequences of the conflict on civilian populations.
Calls for international solidarity
The families of Israeli hostages spoke of their despair and expectations over the perceived inaction of the international community. They pleaded for increased efforts to allow the release of their loved ones, held for months in conditions that they describe as unacceptable. “We call on all nations represented here not to remain indifferent. The release of these civilian prisoners is a question of humanity, a gesture which could bring a little hope in a context where families live in permanent anguish.expressed several speakers quoted by different media.
These families also insisted on the importance of not dissociating the humanitarian emergency from the need for a lasting political solution. They recalled that, for many of them, Christmas or Hanukkah cannot be celebrated as long as their loved ones remain deprived of their liberty.
International awareness
Representatives of the member parties of the Socialist International listened to these testimonies attentively, some emphasizing the need to increase diplomatic efforts for an exchange of prisoners. The latter is seen as a key step in easing tensions in the region and paving the way for a lasting truce.
Voices also insisted on the role that influential actors within the organization, particularly European and Latin American leaders, can play in promoting negotiations between the parties. A specific appeal has been made to the attention of UN Member States to ensure that the hostage issue is high on the international agenda.
Beyond political discussions, this moment served as a reminder that, behind the figures and reports, human lives are at stake. “The pain of the families is unbearable. Every day spent away from their loved ones is one day too many. We must act now, not tomorrow”declared a participant at the end of the meeting.
