Switzerland extends its sanctions against Russia and Belarus
The Confederation has added several dozen names to its list of individuals and legal entities sanctioned because of the war.

Switzerland has added several dozen names to its list of sanctions taken against Russia over the war in Ukraine. It thus took over the modifications decided by the European Union on December 16, the Federal Department of the Economy (DEFR) indicated on Monday.
In total, 54 new individuals and 30 new companies and entities are subject to the asset freeze and the ban on making assets or economic resources available. Natural persons are also prohibited from entering Switzerland or transiting through its territory.
They are mainly members of the army, managers of companies active in the Russian energy sector and people responsible for the deportation of children or the dissemination of propaganda or false information, specifies the DEFR.
“Hybrid attacks”
The 30 companies and entities targeted are mainly Russian arms companies as well as shipping companies transporting Russian crude oil and petroleum products.
On December 16, the EU announced that it had taken the very first sanctions in response to “hybrid attacks” on its territory, against Russian agents accused of “destabilizing” actions within the Union. It also took, for the first time, extensive sanctions against seven Chinese entities and personalities accused of helping Russia in its war against Ukraine.
“Ghost Fleet”
In addition, 52 new vessels are subject to broad bans preventing them from benefiting from maritime services. These are above all tankers that are part of the Russian “ghost fleet” which sell Russian hydrocarbons or petroleum products without respecting the price ceiling or which transport military goods for Russia or grain stolen from Ukraine.
In the commercial field, 32 new entities were also subject to stricter export control measures, indicates the DEFR.
Bélarus
The DEFR also took over the new EU sanctions against Belarus due to the situation there. He added 26 individuals and two organizations to his list.
These include members of the judiciary, such as judges responsible for the repression of civil society and the democratic opposition, as well as officials of various penitentiary establishments where political prisoners suffer ill-treatment. These various sanctions take effect on Tuesday.
