Live chicken prices have not seen any major changes this December. Unlike the same period in 2023, this year prices remain stable.
According to a poultry farmer operating in the wilaya of Bejaia, the prices of live chicken in bulk have been, over the last two days, between 280 and 310 DA per kg. This is practically the same level since the beginning of the month.
A stability which can be explained by the balance between supply and demand and the availability of frozen chicken imported by the State of Brazil. ''Prices cannot exceed the current threshold, because the State has significant stocks of frozen chicken.
Every time prices start to move, the government injects large quantities of frozen chicken stored in cold rooms,'' he explains. Added to this, according to a source, is the drop in demand with the departure of students and schoolchildren on winter vacation. Orders from schools and universities for chicken contribute to setting prices on the market.
Last year, chicken prices reached historic peaks around New Year's Eve. In certain localities, they have exceeded the threshold of 440 DA per kg wholesale.
Is such a scenario possible this year? Our interlocutor dismisses it with certainty. ''Things have changed. Production costs have fallen this year with falling prices for chicks and feed. Added to this is the availability of frozen chicken imported from Brazil. These elements make a surge in prices on New Year's Eve 2025 impossible,'' he said.
