Images published on social networks show the building engulfed in flames, which generated a plume visible from afar in the middle of the day. Route 138 was temporarily closed to allow the various fire safety services to carry out their intervention, confirmed the Sûreté du Québec.
A family business, Bermex was founded in 1983 in Maskinongé. The company operates six different factories and employs a total of 350 employees across Quebec, according to its website. Bermex manufactures solid wood dining room furniture, storage furniture, bistro tables and personalized bar stools.
“Due to the fire currently taking place in the municipality, it is normal that the water is cloudy and/or colored and that the pressure is greatly reduced. For the moment it remains suitable for consumption,” the municipality of Maskinongé announced on its Facebook page.
