“People’s safety has a cost but no price”: the City of wants to reassure visitors to its Christmas market

In the aftermath of the dramatic car-ramming attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market, in Germany, the City of Brest wanted to reassure visitors to its Christmas market, established at Place de la Liberté and Place Wilson this year, on the considerable security measures put in place. “As an organizer, we only want one thing: for children to have stars in their eyes when they come to this type of event. For us, safety has always been a priority so that everyone can enjoy this moment with complete peace of mind,” insists the elected official.

€150,000 for securing the Brest Christmas market

“This is a subject that the municipality has tackled head on for many years, even before the attack in in 2016,” assures Fortuné Pellicano. Who hastens to list the security actions implemented around the Christmas market: “Concrete blocks, large and visible, but we also call on private security agents, the urban tranquility brigade and mediators , and the Police also intervene when necessary.” The system is continually readjusted in anticipation of busy days such as during school holidays.

The deputy mayor recognizes that all these actions have a cost. “But it is a political and budgetary choice that we are making: people’s safety has a cost but no price.” The cost of all of its measures is estimated at €150,000 this year.
