gains 5,600 new inhabitants: a divisive figure

gained 5,600 inhabitants between 2021 and 2022, bringing its population to 356,603 residents, according to INSEE. This assessment, hailed by the town hall as a sign of attractiveness, is criticized by the opposition which warns of the departures of Nice linked to housing and insecurity.

The city of Nice continues its demographic growth, according to INSEE. Between 2021 and 2022, 5 592 habitants additional settlers, bringing the total population to 356 603. A result welcomed by the municipality, but criticized by the opposition.

Over six years, between 2017 and 2022, the city welcomed nearly 14,000 new inhabitantsrepresenting a total growth of 4%. These figures confirm an acceleration compared to the 2020-2021 period, where the increase was 1.3%.

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, was delighted with these data: “These 5,600 new residents of Nice are proof of the attractiveness of our city. Our efforts to make Nice a good place to live, work and invest are bearing fruit. I welcome everyone and invite them to actively participate in the life of our beautiful city. »

A record contested by the opposition

Faced with these results, the municipal opposition expresses doubts. Philippe Vardonelected from the Retrouver Nice group, pointed out the absence of an essential figure: that of departures. “How many Nice residents have left their town because they cannot find housing or a professional future? How many are fleeing insecurity and neighborhood degradation? » he asked.

For him, the notion ofattractiveness must be nuanced : “Nice attracts, it’s undeniable, but this dynamic does not always benefit the historic inhabitants. The risk is that our city becomes more pleasant to newcomers than to those who have lived there forever. »

The question of departures from Nice tempers the optimistic announcements. If the attractiveness of Nice is undeniable, it raises balance issues between welcoming new arrivals and quality of life for current residents. A debate which should intensify in the months to come.
