Faced with a significant increase in recreational, but dangerous, consumption of nitrous oxidealso called laughing gas, the City of (Val-d'Oise) has decided to act with young people and parents through a awareness campaign.

Sold in the form of cartridges (for whipped cream siphons for example) or canisters in local shops and on the Internet, its misuse consists of inhaling the gas through a balloon, after having “cracked” the cartridge to open it.

Immediate risks

Led by the youth service and the green brigade, young people from the Prat youth reception point have created an exhibition in the form of yonkoma mangasby addressing in a creative and engaging way the risks associated with the misuse of nitrous oxide.

Gas consumption presents immediate risks : asphyxia from lack of oxygen, loss of consciousness, burns from the cold of the expelled gas, disorientation, dizziness, falls in particular. In the event of repeated consumption at short intervals and/or in high doses, severe neurological, hematological, psychiatric or cardiac disorders may occur.

1,562 bottles found in 2023

An evening of awareness raising and debate on this subject was held on Friday December 13 at the town hall, in the presence of Cyril Alavoine, sub-prefect of . The Delta association, specializing in addictions, a neurologist, the municipal police, the green brigade and the firefighters, were able to interact with the young people and parents present.

The film can be viewed on the city's website. The manga exhibition will travel between youth centers and schools. 1,562 bottles of nitrous oxide were found in the city, in 2023, by the municipal police, the green brigade, and the green spaces department. A municipal decree was issued by the mayor on October 25, 2023, regulating the possession and consumption of nitrous oxide.
