The death of a 26-year-old driver shakes Beauce

The Coroner's Office was able to confirm the victim's identity late this afternoon. This is Alexandra Poulin, 26, from Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce.

The latter was driving on Route 173, in Vallée-Jonction, when a semi-trailer truck overturned on her car. The driver died instantly.

Since this tragedy, messages of dismay and pain have multiplied on social networks.

Alexandra Poulin worked in a residence for adults with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders.

The director of the residence, Katherine Lessard, wanted to pay tribute to him. “Words fail me to express how unfair life is,” she wrote on Facebook. “My friends lose such an involved woman, but remain lucky to have had you by their side.”

“A huge hole”

His mother, Nathalie Poulin, also spoke out on social networks. The pain felt by her and those close to her is “immense and indescribable.”

“I have no words except a huge hole. I feel like at any moment we're going to wake up from this terrible nightmare. That my cell is going to ring and that you are going to be at the end of the line or that I am going to see you walk through the door of the house,” we can read on his Facebook page.

Nathalie Poulin deplores this unfair end for her daughter who left “too quickly, too soon.”

She wants to “do everything” to avoid further tragedies. “I promise you one thing, this won’t go unpunished. I will fight until the end of my days if necessary so that such an accident never happens again.”

A dangerous intersection

Since the tragedy, several citizens and members of the transport industry have pointed the finger at the owner of the truck involved. This company has been closely monitored by the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ) since “major defects” were discovered in its fleet.

In addition, the junction of routes 112 and 173 in Vallée-Jonction has been the scene of several accidents in recent years. According to residents in the area, a truck has already driven into a snack bar located there.

Since then, several measures have been adopted to secure the intersection. Vehicles weighing 15 tonnes and more can no longer travel there, confirms the MTQ. According to the Journal de Québec, the heavyweight that crushed Alexandra Poulin exceeded this weight.

This element is part of the investigation currently being conducted by the Sûreté du Québec. The driver and the company could face charges. So far, no one has been arrested.
