Near the town of Aigion, on the edge of the Gulf of Corinth, archaeologists have revealed in recent months the presence of an ancient building of relatively large size, with impressive characteristics. For what mythical figure, the Greeks of the IVe century BC built a monumental structure strewn with treasures, on the coasts of the Peloponnese?
Several precious artifacts were found, scattered, in this type of temple. For experts, the presence of this site has a symbolic function: it could have been dedicated to a personality from ancient Greece, potentially to a hero whose identity is debated. An article from Newsweek published on December 11, provides some information on the progress of research and the reflections of historianshistoriansrelaying a press release from the Ministry of Culture.
A site for an unknown hero
Archaeologists began excavating the soil on site in October 2024, unearthing several mursmurs of stone as well as columns approximately 16 meters long. In the remains, objects made of gold are quickly found, one of the artifacts represents a winged figure, holding a scepter. This miniature figurine could have served as a pendant. Two twisted earrings also made of gold were photographed, each decorated with heads of felinesfelines. A golden necklace was among the finds.
It now remains to determine the real usefulness, ceremonial or not, of such a building, approximately three kilometers south of Aigion. The winged form depicted on the pendant seems to be related to the god of love Eros. But the building would not be dedicated to a god. The first theories actually suggest a sort of altar giving thanks to a hero. But nothing currently found on site provides more information on this subject. However, further research over the coming months could shed light on the mysteries of this building and the identity of the person to whom it was dedicated.
