It’s a risk of the magic of Christmas: the trees catching fire. A family paid the price, in Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay (Seine-Maritime).
The tree caught fire and the flames spread into the home, around 12:30 p.m., Thursday December 19, 2024. The occupant, present at the time of the fire, managed to get out before the emergency services arrived.
Firefighters extinguished the fire using a fire hose, after carrying out reconnaissance and securing the scene.
The SDIS men then carried out ventilation and clearing operations.
The victim was taken in by emergency services for a medical check-up. Emergency services indicate that the municipality “will relocate a family of three“, just a few days before the Christmas holidays.
The operation required three engines and ten firefighters.
“Every year, Christmas trees are the cause of house fires, most often due to faulty electric lights”indicates the Seine-Maritime prefecture on X.
“Even today, the firefighters intervened in Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay for a disaster of this type which fortunately did not cause any casualties,” explains the prefecture before providing some advice:
- Keep your tree away from any heat source
- Avoid spray snow
- Do not leave lit string lights unattended
