Last October, Algeria took first place among gas suppliers to the European Union, overtaking Russia, according to Eurostat data. This strategic turning point marks a significant change in the European energy landscape, long dominated by Russia. A turning point, however, is expected following the tensions existing between the old continent and Putin’s country, particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Algerian gas exports to Europe reached a value of 1.3 billion euros in October, an increase of 200 million compared to the previous month. This performance represents 21.6% of total gas imports from the European Unionplacing Algeria ahead of Russia, which saw its deliveries decrease by 6% to 1.3 billion euros over the same period.
Sustained growth in Algerian exports
Furthermore, the United States ranks third, with exports reaching 1.2 billion euros, followed by Norway (777 million euros) and Azerbaijan (431 million euros). Total gas imports from the European Union in October increased by 5%, reaching 6.15 billion euros.

Algeria stops importing construction materials
Algeria benefits from two main gas pipelines: Medgazwhich connects the country to Spain, and Transmedwhich serves Italy. However, the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME), crossing Morocco to reach Spain, has remained closed since November 2021 due to diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Rabat.
A strategy reinforced by infrastructure and investments
To support this dynamic, Sonatrach, the Algerian energy giant, has launched an ambitious investment plan of 50 billion dollars until 2028, including 36 billion intended for the exploration and production of gas and oil. This project also includes the “Boosting Hassi R’Mel” program, which aims to extend the life of the country’s main gas field and increase the volumes extracted.
Ambitious course to meet European demand
Faced with growing European demand and the desire to reduce dependence on Russia, Algeria plans to double its annual gas production to 200 billion cubic meters by 2028compared to around 137 billion currently. This objective is based on a balance between exports and domestic needs, which are constantly increasing.
By consolidating its role as a key supplier, Algeria confirms its strategic position in the energy security of Europe while diversifying its partnerships with countries such as Italy and Spain, France and Germany.
