Phil Collins has opened up about the health issues he faces due to his years of drumming.
The 73-year-old music icon is widely considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, but decades of bashing drum heads have taken a toll on his hands, legs and body.
Speaking to Drumeo in 2022 – but the interview has only now been published in a documentary called Phil Collins: Drummer First – the star explained that he is still adjusting to his inability to use the instrument.
He told the cameras: “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and do nothing.”
“If I ever wake up and can hold a pair of chopsticks, then I’ll have a go.” But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles. »
“It’s still sinking in a bit,” the maestro added of his health. “I’ve spent my whole life playing drums. Not being able to do that anymore is a shock. »
His son Nic Collins also appears in the documentary and shares more information about the Genesis star’s health issues.
He revealed that his father had to undergo “major neck surgery which stemmed from all those years of playing drums and poor posture”.
He also said the drum master suffered from foot drop, a condition in which “one of his feet has no feeling,” forcing him to use a cane.
