Spain: a murder solved thanks to a photo on Google Maps

This Wednesday, December 18, Spanish authorities announced the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a man whose disappearance dates back to November 2023.

A revealing image taken by chance

The case took an unexpected turn thanks to a photo taken in 2009 by the Street View function of Google Maps. In this photo, which has gone viral on social networks, we can see a man loading a large bag into the trunk of a red car. This innocuous detail turned out to be an important piece for investigators.

The body of the victim, a man of Cuban origin aged around forty, was found dismembered in a nearby cemetery after several months of investigation. Suspicion quickly fell on two people close to him: his wife and her alleged lover, both residents of Tajueco.

If other clues such as telephone tapping had already allowed investigators to tighten their grip, the photo reinforced their suspicions by directly linking one of the suspects to disturbing facts.

A rare coincidence

The discovery of this image is the result of an incredible combination of circumstances. According to Google Maps data, the last update of photos of this street in Tajueco dates back to November 2009, 15 years before the events. Since then, no Google car has captured images in this remote area.

The photo, which has since been blurred by Google Maps, was shared millions of times on Twitter, where it aroused the astonishment of Internet users. “You kill a man in a godforsaken town and you get caught because of Google Maps, I can’t believe it!” », exclaims one of them.

An ongoing investigation

For the moment, the Spanish authorities have not revealed all the details of the case, but the arrest of the two suspects marks a decisive step forward. The use of technology such as Street View to solve a crime illustrates the evolution of the tools available to investigators and their unexpected role in certain cases.
