DECRYPTION – Bern has been negotiating simplified access to the single market for years. Recently, discussions stumbled over an increase in its financial participation in EU funds.
After 170 meetings since March, soon white smoke for Switzerland and the European Union? This week, discussions between diplomats from the two sides made great strides. Bern could in this context officially accept this Friday, during its last meeting of the year, the Brussels agreement proposal. In this case, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, would travel to Switzerland before Christmas in order to seal the conclusion of the negotiations. Brussels has been asking for years for these relationships to be clearly defined from an institutional point of view. Bern, for its part, wants simplified access to the single European market.
