At the start of the week, the Ukrainian army announced that it had a new weapon: a laser which could protect its skies even more.
The war in Ukraine has become the scene of encounters of new weapons technologies. Since the start of the conflict, we can see Ukraine developing new weapons, as cheaply built with the means at hand, as other ultra-sophisticated ones. But this Monday, Vadym Soukharevskyi, the commander of the Ukrainian drone forces, announced that he had a new laser, reports Reuters.
Range of 2 kilometers
It is called the Tryzub, “Trident”, in Ukrainian. A name which is not insignificant because the trident is the symbol present on the Ukrainian coat of arms. “Today we can already shoot down planes at an altitude of more than 2 km with this laser”declared Vadym Soukharevskyi earlier this week.
We do not yet know the origin of this laser, but domestic production is more than likely. The Tryzub would be able to destroy enemy flying objects, such as drones or even combat planes, up to 2,000 meters altitude, indicates the magazine Geo.
Such technology is not within the reach of all states. However, the United Kingdom has been developing its DragonFire for many months, which should be sent to Ukrainian soil next April, but for now, the British laser is still in the testing phase. Commissioning is estimated for 2027.
Our English neighbors are not the only ones to boast of developing or possessing such technology. Russia, the United States, Israel and even China would be countries in possession of operational laser weapons.
