LIVE – Cyclone Chido in Mayotte: Retailleau calls to “be much tougher towards the Comoros” on irregular immigration

Cyclone Chido caused the death of at least 45 people and left more than 500 injured in Mozambique, according to a new report published Wednesday by the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management of this southern African country.

After having devastated the French archipelago of Mayotte on Saturday, where Paris fears “hundreds” even “thousands” of deaths, Chido hit the African continent on Sunday in northern Mozambique, in the province of Cabo Delgado. The previous report on Tuesday reported 34 deaths in the country.

Nearly 500 injured were counted after the passage of the cyclone whose wind gusts reached 260 km/h and precipitation 250 mm in 24 hours, added the Institute.

Nearly 24,000 houses were completely destroyed, 12,300 others were partially destroyed according to the new report.

According to the Institute, more than 181,000 people were affected by Chido in this Portuguese-speaking country regularly hit by natural disasters.

Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been plagued for two months by post-election violence in addition to the persistence of jihadist violence in the north.
