Russian police have reportedly arrested two suspects in the assassination of the head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense forces, Igor Kirillov, and his deputy, reports the influential Russian daily “Kommersant”. This information is also reported by the Telegram channel “112”.
According to the interlocutor of “Kommersant”, the trail of the suspects was followed from the crime scene, where surveillance cameras recorded a couple of suspicious cars.
“112” notes that the suspects have already confessed and, in particular, revealed to investigators the identities of the organizers of the murder.
The state news agency TASS, citing the Russian special services FSB, speaks of an arrested suspect believed to be a 29-year-old Uzbek national.
The Ukrainian online media Ukraïnska Pravda, for its part, claims that the United States “was not warned in advance” of the liquidation of General Kirillov in Moscow.
A senior US official speaking to journalists on condition of anonymity and quoted by AFP said that “the United States was not aware of the operation in advance.” “We do not support or facilitate this type of activity,” he added.
Recall, the assassination was carried out early Tuesday morning in a suburb in the southeast of Moscow, on Ryazansky Avenue. This neighborhood is home to skyscrapers, shopping centers, and an attractive neighborhood park, Kuskovo, with an 18th-century wooden palace and an ornamental lake. The front line in Ukraine is 650 miles from the capital, a 15-hour drive.
But, as The Guardian notes ironically, this epic distance did not deter the Ukrainian security service (SBU) from carrying out Kirillov’s assassination. Sources in Kyiv confirmed that the service was responsible. The general’s death is the SBU’s most daring operation to date – a strike intended to sow panic and fear among senior Kremlin and military officials.
One theory is that the explosive-laden scooter was placed in front of the residential building around 4 a.m. Tuesday. The bomb had been placed on an electric scooter outside the house or in a trash can. The device was then triggered remotely, using a cell phone or a radio signal. According to 112, the attackers would have had access to images from the live surveillance camera, while being placed in a car-sharing car.
Still according to The Guardian, missions of this kind would not be possible for SBU without the involvement of local Russian collaborators. The latter appear to be ideologically motivated individuals who oppose Russia’s war and are willing to take part in dangerous operations.
